Why I think Summer is one of the best season to network.

There is something about the combination of sunny weather, a little more free time, and frozen yogurt that make people happier and more relaxed. I’m sure you would all agree that it’s so much easier to connect with warm bodies and smiling faces.

As many of the formal networking groups take a break for the months of July and August, these summer months offer the perfect opportunity to nurture the new relationships that you developed in the first half of the year. While there are many great community events happening throughout the city, it is also a great season to create your own opportunities by inviting people to a backyard BBQ or a patio potluck.

One of the best advantages of hosting your own event is control!

1. You get to decide who comes:
Invite clients and make it an appreciation party.
Invite business acquaintances and help them network together.
Invite friends who you’ve lost touch with and have no idea what they are up to.

2. You can decide on the theme and activities
Make it fun.
Break out an interactive board game.
Create multiple outcomes. For example, if one of your goals is to eat better, you can have a healthy creative potluck.

3. You can design what you talk about:
One of the most important skills when networking is to practice asking questions and listening. I can assure you that even with good friends, there are lots of things you don’t know about each other. Get a few creative questions prepared on cue cards for an ice-breaker exercise and let your guest find out what they didn’t know about one another.

Many people have more time in the summer to check out and learn new things. If you are in a business where you provide workshops and seminars, this is a great season to promote yourself and offer sessions.

If you want your business to grow, make your summer about connecting, reconnecting, and nurturing the seeds that you have sewn in the spring.
